The incident occurred early on Saturday when emergency services were alerted to a fire on a bridge near a power plant. Firefighters swiftly responded, but the damage was already significant. The police are investigating the case as a suspected act of arson, and the authorities have confirmed that the repair work will take a considerable amount of time, with cold weather posing additional challenges.
Berlin's Senator for Economic Affairs, Franziska Giffey, emphasized the severity of the situation, stating that numerous care facilities, hospitals, and social institutions are among the affected households and businesses. The local transportation system has also been impacted, with electronic information signs and ticket machines at train stations not functioning, although trains continue to operate.
This power outage is not an isolated incident. In September, a similar fire damaged electricity pylons, leaving tens of thousands without power. The police also suspected arson in that case, and an anonymous anarchist group claimed responsibility online. Germany's infrastructure has been under heightened security due to the risk of sabotage, including potential foreign interference.
As Berlin struggles to restore power, residents are urged to take precautions. The police have advised residents to stay with friends or relatives if possible, use mobile phones sparingly, and ensure they have torches available. The city is facing a challenging winter, and the authorities are working to minimize the impact on the community.
